Proposed co-location of a coffee shop at Gallery 1855

Council decision/outcome
During the consultation period we had over 350 responses and attendees across the various methods available for providing feedback. Of the 336 feedback form responses received, 48% indicated they were supportive of the co-location of a coffee shop; 45% stated they were opposed. Around four in 10 (39%) said they would like to see a change in Gallery 1855’s opening hours.
At its meeting on Tuesday 13 August 2019, Council considered the feedback received from the community and made the following decisions:
to trial a mobile pop-up café within the Tea Tree Gully Township precinct (rather than co-locate a coffee shop inside the gallery). Council will call for expressions of interest in the next few months
to extend the gallery opening hours, in line with community feedback
to promote Gallery 1855 as a workshop, exhibition space and venue space for hire. Council will continue to look at ways to increase community participation in the arts for all ages and abilities, including volunteers.

Background
We were exploring the opportunity of co-locating a coffee shop and a potential change in the current operating hours in the building of Gallery 1855 and wanted to understand the community’s views on this.
Gallery 1855 is a beautifully restored heritage building that we would like to see enjoyed by more residents and visitors to the Tea Tree Gully Township. We are keen to find a way to encourage visitors to linger longer, enjoy exhibitions and support SA artists.
Gallery 1855 comprises of a multi-level gallery, studio, office work area, kitchen facility, toilets and car parking areas facing Haines Road, Tea Tree Gully (see photos). The gallery is located in Pine Park to the north, south and east. The balance of the land is occupied by the Tea Tree Gully CFS Brigade. The studio and the gallery are available for hire. This site is Crown Land under the care and control of Council.
After considering community views Council will then look at next steps, which may include amending the Pine Park Community Land Management Plan and seeking expressions of interest to help progress the co-located model.
