Background

Council is seeking feedback from the community about a Dernancourt memorial to recognise the naming of the suburb of Dernancourt and its links to France and WWI, to be placed alongside the River Torrens Linear Park pathway.

Council is proposing to install a memorial within the suburb of Dernancourt to provide details on both the importance of ‘the battles of Dernancourt’ and how the naming of the suburb of Dernancourt came into being.

The memorial is proposed to be a small entry statement style recycled red brick ‘wall’, which is themed from the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery in France. The memorial would be approx. 1m high x 2m wide x 600mm deep and include:

  • A white concrete top
  • Etched metal interpretive plaques detailing the importance of the battle and the naming of the suburb, including a location map of Dernancourt, France
  • Etched stone on front and rear with the text “Their name liveth for evermore”

The project also includes a small access path (min. width 1.54m) to be constructed to the memorial from the main path to provide inclusive access.

River Torrens Linear Park is recognised under the Dernancourt/Highbury (River Torrens Linear Park) Community Land Management Plan (CLMP). Installation of the proposed memorial will require an amendment to this CLMP as memorials are not currently included in the Plan.

Note: Installation of our usual onsite signage was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
