Background

We are inviting our community to provide feedback to have their say about how the City of Tea Tree Gully is represented.

Section 12 of the Local Government Act 1999 requires that councils must undertake a representation review to determine whether the community would benefit from an alteration to Council's composition or ward structure.

Representation reviews are generally undertaken every 8 years. The Minister for Local Government has specified that the City of Tea Tree Gully is required to undertake and complete a review during the period of October 2024 and October 2025.

Council resolved to commence its Representation review in August 2024. Since then a series of workshops have been held with Elected Members to present an Information Paper and Discussion Papers, discuss the review process, composition and ward structure options and key issues.

At its meeting on 25 March 2025, after considering a Discussion Paper which provided further relevant information and ward structure options, Council resolved that it approves, in principle, its preferred future composition and structure be as per Option 1 from the Discussion Paper.

Council is proposing the following in respect to its future composition and structure (which is unchanged from the current composition and structure):

  • The principal member of Council will be a Mayor elected by the community (as per the requirements of Section 51 of the Local Government Act 1999)
  • The future elected body of Council will comprise the Mayor and twelve (12) ward councillors
  • The City of Tea Tree Gully will continue to be divided into six (6) wards, as per the current ward structure, with each ward being represented by two (2) ward councillors
  • The wards to continue to be named/titled Pedare, Steventon, Hillcott, Drumminor, Balmoral and Water Gully (please see page 3 in the Representation Report to view the map).

More information can be found in the Representation Report which outlines Council's preferred representation structure for the City of Tea Tree Gully and examines the advantages and disadvantages. The Representation Report was endorsed by Council at the 8 April 2025 Council meeting.

Council will consider the community's feedback before any further decisions are made in relation to the proposed future structure and composition of Council.

The representation review outcome must be published in the Government Gazette by 1 January 2026, and any changes will come into effect at the next Local Government elections in November 2026.
