FAQs
What is waste management?
The term waste management describes the actions needed to manage waste from generation to collection and disposal. The aim of waste management is to reduce the impacts of waste on health and the environment.
What is resource recovery?
Resource recovery is the activity of separating materials from waste that can be recycled into new products or used as an energy alternative to fossil fuels. The aim of resource recovery is to divert as much waste from landfill as possible.
Why is a strategy needed?
Waste management is one of the most important services we provide. And now more than ever, we must work smarter and more collaboratively to build a sustainable and liveable City.
With the cost and environmental impact of waste management continuing to increase, we have commenced the development of a long-term strategy. This strategy seeks to address the growing volume of waste being generated, the need to recover more resources, changes in the waste industry and shifting government priorities.
Will the strategy impact the waste services I currently use?
It’s too early to say. During the consultation stage of the strategy development process we will engage with a number of stakeholders, including the broader community, as we seek to identify and explore new and innovative ways to reduce waste, improve resource recovery and build a more sustainable and liveable city.
Will it cost more?
Waste management is one of the most costly services we deliver, costing Council more than 10% of total revenue. Reducing the amount of waste generated in our city and diverting precious resources from landfill will assist in decreasing the cost of providing this service.
The community value and financial impact of any changes to our waste management practices will be considered during the development of this strategy.
Why is Council engaging with the community?
We are developing a long-term strategy to support our community in reducing waste, recycling more and creating a city where waste is seen as a valuable resource.
Good decision are based on good information. That’s why we are asking our community to get involved. We want to better understand your thoughts and hear your ideas, so we can incorporate your thinking into the strategy.
What can I do to contribute to better waste management and resource recovery?
You can do your part by recycling more, like putting food scraps in the green organics bin. Recycling more is just one simple way to help reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill. For more information visit cttg.sa.gov.au/waste.
